What is Spirulina?

What is Spirulina

Typically, when I want to recommend a safe and effective way to detox the body, I suggest my clients try spirulina. This is a blue-green algae that has been used for hundreds of years to treat several disease states or to simply support the immune system.

What can Spirulina help with?

Studies have shown that spirulina can have the following health benefits:

  • Boosts the immune system
  • Helps to decrease a Candida overgrowth
  • Suppresses HIV and AIDS
  • Decreases blood pressure
  • Decreases cholesterol
  • Lowers Stroke Risk
  • Lowers Cancer risk

For those that think only meat can give you good amounts of protein….

….think again! Spirulina contains 65-71 % complete protein where beef only contains 22%! That is a HUGE difference. In fact, you would only need 2 Tablespoons of spirulina at each meal to serve as a protein replacement. Here is a yummy recipe for a spirulina snack to add more protein to your diet.

What types of Spirulina are out there:

You can find spirulina in the form of capsules, tablets, powder, or flakes. As always, it is important to do your homework when it comes to supplements. Make sure the spirulina you choose is organic and comes from a reputable source. Otherwise, the spirulina could be filled with toxic heavy metals that could destroy your health.

The optimal dose:

You can start with 3-5 grams per day and increase as times goes on. You can also spread out this dose during the day and take it 2-3 times daily instead of only once. It is important to start with a lower dose and work your way up so that you won’t get extreme detox effects, depending on the state of your health. Signs and symptoms of detox can be a headache, flatulence, darker stools (when taking spirulina), tiredness, and/or excitability. So, start slow and increase your dose every 3 days or so.

Spirulina truly is a Superfood as it is abundant in highly absorbable amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Anyone could benefit from it by including it in their daily routine.

*Please note, if you have hyperthyroidism, any allergies to algae or iodine, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult a healthcare practitioner before taking it.
